   Performance of Epoxy Powder Coatings
The performance of epoxy powder coatings is what differentiates them from solvent-based coatings and water-based coatings, mainly reflected in four core dimensions: mechanical strength, chemical stability, construction adaptability, and environmental friendliness.


1. Exceptional Mechanical Properties: Damage Resistance & Strong Adhesion
This is one of the most core properties of epoxy powder coatings, ensuring the coating film is not easily damaged or peeled off during use:
Superior adhesion: After curing, it bonds tightly with substrates such as metals (steel, aluminum), glass, and ceramics. It usually meets the Grade 0 standard in GB/T 9286 Paints and Varnishes - Cross-Cut Test (no film peeling at all after cross-cutting), and is not prone to delamination even in environments with vibration, or thermal and cold cycles.
High hardness & scratch resistance: The pencil hardness of the coating film can reach 2H-4H (per GB/T 6739), far exceeding that of ordinary solvent-based coatings (usually below 1H). It is suitable for workpieces with frequent contact (e.g., household appliance casings, tool handles).
Balanced impact resistance & flexibility: By adjusting the formula, dual properties of "impact resistance + bending resistance" can be achieved. The falling weight impact strength can reach over 50 cm·kg (per GB/T 1732), and no cracks occur in the bending test (with a 2mm-diameter mandrel), preventing the coating film from cracking due to slight deformation of the workpiece.
2. Excellent Chemical & Weather Resistance: Corrosion Resistance & Aging Resistance
According to different application scenarios, the chemical stability of epoxy powder coatings can be divided into "general-purpose" and "special-purpose" types, with core properties including:
Outstanding corrosion resistance: It has good resistance to water, saltwater (3% NaCl solution), weak acids (5% hydrochloric acid, acetic acid), weak alkalis (5% sodium hydroxide), and most organic solvents (ethanol, gasoline, mineral oil). The salt spray test (per GB/T 10125) can last 500-1000 hours (depending on coating thickness, for 60-120μm), which is far better than traditional solvent-based epoxy coatings (usually within 300 hours). It is often used for workpieces in outdoor/corrosive environments such as pipelines, steel structures, and automobile chassis.
Weather resistance (type-dependent):
Ordinary epoxy powder coatings (without weather-resistant additives): Poor UV resistance, prone to yellowing and loss of gloss after long-term outdoor use (usually 6-12 months). Suitable for indoor or sheltered environments (e.g., power distribution cabinets, machine tool casings).
Weather-resistant epoxy powder coatings (added with UV absorbers and hindered amine light stabilizers): Weather resistance is improved to no obvious gloss loss for 2-3 years, applicable to semi-outdoor scenarios (e.g., community guardrails, air conditioner outdoor unit brackets).
High-temperature stability: Regular epoxy powder coatings can be used continuously in environments of -40℃~120℃ after curing. Special high-temperature resistant epoxy coatings (added with inorganic fillers) can withstand short-term high temperatures of 150℃~200℃, suitable for parts around engines, oven liners, etc.
3. Convenient Construction & Curing Properties: High Efficiency & Easy Control
Compared with solvent-based coatings, the construction characteristics of epoxy powder coatings are more suitable for industrial mass production:
High curing efficiency: It usually cures into a film within 10-20 minutes at 160℃~200℃, no long-term baking is required. Moreover, there is no sagging or pinholes during curing (due to controllable fluidity of molten powder), making it suitable for assembly line operations (e.g., coating of household appliances and automobile parts).
Good film uniformity: By controlling the voltage (60-90kV) and powder output through electrostatic spraying, uniform film thickness (with a deviation of ±5μm) can be achieved. In addition, it is not easy to miss coating on complex structures such as edges, corners, and grooves, solving the "edge sagging" problem of solvent-based coatings.
High utilization rate & recyclability: Unattached powder can be collected through a recovery system and reused. The total utilization rate can reach over 95% (while that of solvent-based coatings is only 60-70%), reducing raw material waste.
4. Environmental & Safety Properties: No VOCs & Low Pollution
This is one of the core advantages of epoxy powder coatings, meeting modern environmental protection requirements:
No Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emissions: The coating has a 100% solid content, and no solvents (such as toluene and xylene) are volatilized during construction. It does not cause air pollution or harm the health of operators, and meets national environmental standards such as GB 30981 Limits of Harmful Substances in Industrial Protective Coatings. There is no need to be equipped with waste gas treatment equipment (solvent-based coatings require the installation of Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) devices).
No heavy metal pollution: The content of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium in compliant products is far lower than the limit specified in the EU RoHS Directive. It can be used in fields with high environmental requirements such as exported household appliances and children's toy accessories.
The core advantages of epoxy powder coatings lie in "high protection (corrosion resistance, impact resistance), strong environmental friendliness (no VOCs), and easy construction (high utilization rate)". Its essence is to solve pain points such as "easy corrosion of workpieces, poor product appearance, high production pollution, and high cost" through technical performance. It is one of the important directions to replace traditional solvent-based coatings in the current industrial coating field, and has become the mainstream choice especially in scenarios with high requirements for environmental protection and corrosion resistance.
