Outdoor Equipment Coatings: Core Performance Requirements for Powder Coatings
Outdoor facilities (such as fitness equipment, guardrails, street lamp poles, traffic signs, and photovoltaic brackets) are long-term exposed to complex environments like sunlight, rain, temperature and humidity changes, and acid-alkali erosion. This imposes extremely high requirements on the performance of powder coatings used for surface protection.
Their core performance should revolve around four dimensions: weather resistance, durability, mechanical strength, and environmental adaptability, which can be specifically broken down into the following key indicators and characteristics:
1. Core Performance: Weather Resistance (the "Lifeline" for Outdoor Use)
Weather resistance is the primary performance of outdoor powder coatings, directly determining the "service life" and "appearance stability" of the facility surface coating. It mainly resists damage from natural factors such as ultraviolet rays, high temperatures, rainwater, and frost. The key indicators include:
UV Aging Resistance
Intense outdoor ultraviolet rays can cause degradation of resins and pigments in the coating, leading to "loss of gloss, discoloration, chalking, and cracking" of the coating. High-quality outdoor powder coatings must meet the following requirements:
Resin Selection: Priority is given to fluorocarbon resins (PVDF), ultra-weather-resistant polyester resins (e.g., HAA curing system), and silicone-modified polyester resins. These resins have a stable molecular structure and can effectively block the damage of ultraviolet rays to the inner part of the coating. (Ordinary epoxy resins, due to poor weather resistance, are only used indoors and are strictly prohibited for outdoor use.)
Pigment Selection: Inorganic weather-resistant pigments (such as titanium dioxide, iron oxide red/yellow) or high-performance organic pigments (such as quinacridone-based pigments) should be used. Azo pigments, which are prone to fading, should be avoided.
Testing Standard: Comply with GB/T 1865-2009 Paints and Varnishes - Artificial Weathering and Exposure to Artificial Radiation. After 5,000 hours of xenon lamp aging test, the coating should have a gloss loss rate ≤ 15%, a color difference ΔE ≤ 3, and no chalking or cracking (fluorocarbon coatings can achieve weather resistance of more than 10,000 hours).
Damp Heat Resistance
High humidity and rainy environments can easily cause the coating to "blister, peel, and rust" (especially when the substrate is steel). The coating must meet:
Testing Standard: According to GB/T 1740-2021 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Resistance to Damp Heat, after being placed in an environment with (40±2)°C and relative humidity (95±3)% for 1,000 hours, the coating should have no blistering, rusting, or decrease in adhesion (adhesion grade ≥ Grade 1, tested by cross-cut method).
Freeze-Thaw Cycle Resistance
In cold regions, the alternation of low temperatures (below -30°C) in winter and snow melting in spring can cause water inside the coating to freeze and expand, then contract, leading to cracking. A high-quality coating must withstand more than 50 cycles of "-40°C freezing → 23°C thawing" without cracks or peeling.
2. Basic Protective Performance: Chemical Corrosion Resistance and Water Resistance
Outdoor facilities may come into contact with rainwater (containing acidic substances, such as acid rain), dew, dust (containing salt, such as in coastal areas), and cleaning agents. Therefore, the coating must have erosion resistance:
Acid Resistance / Alkali Resistance
Acid Resistance: When immersed in a 5% hydrochloric acid solution for 24 hours, the coating should have no discoloration, blistering, or peeling (to simulate acid rain erosion).
Alkali Resistance: When immersed in a 5% sodium hydroxide solution for 24 hours, the coating should maintain normal performance (to simulate industrial dust or cleaning agent residues).
Special Requirements for Coastal Areas: Additional salt spray resistance testing (GB/T 10125-2021) is required. The neutral salt spray test (NSS) should last for more than 1,000 hours without red rust on the coating (a zinc-rich primer must be used to form a "coating + zinc layer" double protection).
Water Resistance
After long-term exposure to rain or immersion, the coating must maintain integrity: In accordance with GB/T 1733-1993, after being immersed in distilled water at (23±2)°C for 1,000 hours, the coating should have no whitening, blistering, or decrease in adhesion.
3. Mechanical Performance: Resistance to External Damage
Outdoor facilities are prone to collision (e.g., fitness equipment, guardrails), friction (e.g., public seats), and scratching (e.g., during transportation). Thus, the coating must have sufficient "hardness, adhesion, and impact resistance".
High-Temperature/Low-Temperature Stability
High temperature: When exposed to direct sunlight in summer, the surface temperature of the coating can reach 60-80°C. The coating must avoid softening and sticking (with the glass transition temperature Tg of the resin ≥ 50°C).
Low temperature: In low-temperature conditions in winter (below -40°C), the coating must prevent embrittlement and cracking (no abnormalities in low-temperature impact tests).
Stain Resistance and Easy Cleanliness
Outdoor facilities are prone to dust accumulation and contamination (such as oil stains and bird droppings). High-quality coatings should have "low surface energy" to ensure that stains can be easily washed away by rainwater or wiped off with a damp cloth. Generally, the water contact angle of the coating is required to be ≥ 90° (hydrophobic type), and some high-end products can reach more than 110° (superhydrophobic type).
Environmental Friendliness
The coating must comply with national VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) emission standards. Powder coatings themselves have no solvent evaporation (VOC content is almost 0) and do not contain heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium, and mercury), meeting environmental regulations such as RoHS and REACH. Outdoor public facilities must pass environmental certification to avoid harm to the environment and human health.
The core performance of powder coatings for outdoor facilities follows the principle of "weather resistance as the foundation, protection as the essence, and mechanical properties as the shield". When selecting a coating, comprehensive considerations should be given to the service environment (e.g., coastal/inland areas, high-temperature/cold regions), facility functions (e.g., load-bearing/non-load-bearing, high-frequency contact/low contact), and budget costs. A high-quality coating can extend the "maintenance-free period" of outdoor facilities to 5-20 years, significantly reducing subsequent renovation costs while ensuring long-term aesthetics and safety.
